The world of skincare can feel pretty overwhelming when you’re just getting started. The deeper you dive, the more questions seem to appear. What are active ingredients? Do you really need a toner? What are retinoids? Am I using too many products? Am I not using enough?
Without in-person advice from a dermatologist, it’s tricky to know if you’re doing the right thing. And no one wants to damage their skin in the pursuit of improving it!
Fortunately, in the age of YouTube and TikTok, there are other ways we can get reliable, trustworthy skincare information.
We have dermatologists and skin experts openly and freely sharing their knowledge with the public, cutting through the noise and taking away some of the guesswork.
And one of the most popular voices helping people navigate the skincare world is Dr Shereene Idriss, founder of the brand I’ll be reviewing today, Dr. Idriss.
At its core, Dr. Idriss is about taking the confusion out of skincare and sharing science-backed guidance that helps people build routines that are right for their skin.
One way the brand puts this into practice is by creating skincare collections that target specific skin concerns, like the Major Fade line, which has been purposefully formulated to tackle uneven skin tone and dark marks.
I’ve been testing the Major Fade collection for the past couple of months, and I’m finally ready to share my thoughts on the formulas, the textures, and how the products actually worked on my skin.
If you want to find out more about this line, keep reading!
Who is Dr Idriss?
Dr Shereene Idriss is a NYC-based Board Certified dermatologist that shares her skincare expertise across her various social media channels. She became known as the ‘PillowtalkDerm’ after posting relaxed, unfiltered skincare chats online, where she debunked beauty myths and explained complex ingredients in a simple and accessible way.
About the Major Fade line
Dr. Idriss’s Major Fade collection, or ‘solution system’ as the brand calls it, is a set of products that work together to tackle skin concerns like discolouration, hyperpigmentation, and post-inflammatory marks.
It’s powered by active ingredients like niacinamide, glycolic acid, lactic acid and vitamin C which improve both skin tone and texture.
Dr. Idriss Major Fade Hyper Serum Review

What it is
The Dr. Idriss Major Fade Hyper Serum is a daily treatment that combines several brightening ingredients to help fight off dark spots and discolouration.
Key ingredients
- Niacinamide – A form of vitamin B3 that helps regulate excess oil, reduce the appearance of pores and dark spots, and strengthen the skin barrier.
- Alpha-Arbutin – A plant-derived ingredient that brightens the skin and improves skin tone.
- Squalane – An oil that locks moisture into the skin.
- Kojic Acid – A skin-brightening ingredient that tackles hyperpigmentation.
My experience
Packaging-wise, the Dr. Idriss Major Fade Hyper Serum is definitely the most innovative product of the three. It comes in what looks pretty much like a syringe. You twist to unlock it, then click the bottom to dispense the serum.
At a time when almost every serum comes with a dropper, this ‘serum-pen’ format is a very welcome change. The fact that you also get a spare refill to keep the active ingredients fresh is another massive tick for me.
Each cartridge is 14.21ml, so you get around 28ml of product in total. It doesn’t sound a lot but actually it’s pretty comparable to other dark spot fading serums, like Anua’s Niacinamide 10% + TXA 4%.
Compared to the Anua serum, which is quite watery, the Dr. Idriss Hyper Serum has a more lotion-like texture. That’s not to say it’s any heavier: the Dr. Idriss serum is very lightweight and it absorbs into the skin in little time at all.
This sits undetectably under other skincare products (and makeup), making it the perfect product to sandwich between your toner and moisturiser of choice. I love how this feels on my skin and reach for it quite a lot, specifically because I know it’ll play well with anything I apply on top.
Has it made any huge changes to my skin? It’s sort of hard to tell when you’re using all three Major Fade products in conjunction. It could be any one of the three, or likely a combination of all three, that’s helping fade dark marks and even out my skin.
I am seeing improvements, though, which is very promising.
Dr. Idriss Major Fade Flash Mask Review

What it is
The Dr Idriss Major Fade Flash Mask is a wash-off exfoliating treatment powered by AHAs. It helps brighten dull skin, smooth uneven texture, and reduce the appearance of dark spots.
Key ingredients
- Glycolic Acid 15% – An alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA) that exfoliates and brightens the skin.
- Tranexamic Acid – An amino acid derivative which helps fade existing dark spots and prevent new ones from appearing.
- Lactic Acid 3% – Another AHA that removes dead skin cells and smooths the skin.
- Glycerin – A humectant that draws moisture into the skin.
- Panthenol – Also known as provitamin B5, it helps keep the skin soft and hydrated.
My experience
I’m usually a little skeptical of wash-off masks, but this one actually seems like it’s making a difference to my skin.
The tingling sensation (when you first apply it) definitely adds to the experience – it makes it feel like the mask is getting to work straight away. I can’t deny, though, the first time I used it the stinging caught me off guard.
Typically that means my skin does not agree with a product and is about to flare up. To be on the safe side I washed it off right away and put it down to my skin barrier being a little compromised. I’d try again another day.
However, after doing a bit of research, I discovered this was actually a pretty natural reaction to the product. The next time I used it (and the occasions after that) I was more prepared!
I would err on the side of caution if your skin is very sensitive, though. It could potentially cause some irritation for those who can’t tolerate strong exfoliants.
Now, let’s get to the good bit – does the Dr Idriss Flash Mask actually work?
I think so! I’ve been using it pretty consistently – two to three times a week – and I’ve seen definite changes in my skin. I think it does help that AHAs get to work quickly, so you don’t have to wait months to see improvements from this mask.
The most noticeable difference has been my skin’s texture, which feels much smoother than before. I’ve also found that my complexion looks brighter overall, my pores don’t seem to become as clogged, and I’m experiencing fewer breakouts.
This has been a game changer for me, and I really hadn’t expected to like it as much as I do!
Dr. Idriss Major Fade Active Seal Review

What it is
Dr. Idriss’s Active Seal is the third and final step in the Major Fade solution. It’s a super lightweight gel-cream that helps lock in hydration while improving skin tone and minimising dark spots.
Key ingredients
- Vitamin C (Tetrahexyldecyl Ascorbate) – A stable form of vitamin C that helps brighten the skin and reduce the appearance of dark spots.
- 4-butylresorcinol – An antioxidant that brightens the skin and helps even out skin tone.
- Allantoin – A calming ingredient that soothes irritation and supports the skin barrier.
- Ceramides – Fatty acids that protect the skin from moisture loss and damage from external pollutants.
My experience
I don’t really have strong feelings on this moisturiser. I enjoy the formula in general – it’s lightweight, non-sticky and sinks into the skin quickly.
It also provides a decent amount of hydration. Some gel creams can dry up into nothing, this one definitely keeps my skin feeling soft and nourished all day/night.
That said, for the price, this product doesn’t wow me enough to make me go out and repurchase it.
It’s also worth noting that, because this cream does contain Vitamin C, it does turn orange over time. I’ve had this moisturiser about six months and it has oxidised significantly.
Realistically, if you were to use it night and day over those six months (I wasn’t this consistent), you probably would have used it up before it degraded. So it’s unlikely to be a huge problem, but just something to keep in mind!
Is the Dr. Idriss Major Fade line worth the hype?
My verdict is, for the most part, yes.
I usually suffer with post-acne marks that take ages to disappear by themselves, but they seem to be fading much quicker with repeated use of these products.
I really like the Flash Mask, as it’s the Major Fade product that delivers the quickest results. Every time I use it, my skin looks noticeably smoother, brighter and more refreshed.
The Hyper Serum has become a fast favourite too. It’s been so easy to incorporate it into my daily skincare routine – I’ll be really sad when I use it all up!
The Active Seal moisturiser is nice but not a must-have for me. I’d have no qualms about using it again, but wouldn’t go out of my way to buy it (especially given the price).
Overall, I think this is a strong set of products and I definitely do think they’re helping prevent and minimise dark spots. I’m eager to see what else Dr. Idriss comes out with!
Where can I buy the Major Fade line
You can order these products directly from the Dr. Idriss website. They’re available separately or as part of the ‘Major Fade Solution System’, a set that contains all three products.
