I know what you’re thinking: there’s a national lockdown, why would I need a new coat if I’m trapped in the house most of the time? Buuuuut, we have to find some way to impress the neighbours when we go out for our daily walks. Am I right? And getting the chance to throw on our chic, warm outerwear is basically the best thing about winter! When the cold weather comes along I relish the prospect of switching out my wardrobe and rediscovering all the woolly jumpers I’d stored away. It’s even better when you know it’s time to retire the old sweaters, jackets and coats and invest in something new.
In an effort to keep up with the ever-changing seasonal trends, I’ve compiled a list of some of the best women’s winter coats for 2021. Take a look and see if any of these can tempt you!
1. Belted Robe Coat
This is a classic style that pretty much never goes out of fashion. If there’s one coat from this list that you 100% need to buy, it’s this. Welcome it into your capsule wardrobe with loving arms.
This type of coat is both warm and chic – a winning combination. It’s reminiscent of a more formal (and more outdoor appropriate) dressing grown, which is perhaps why I like it so much!
If you’re looking for something a little oversized, this & Other Stories Belted Oversized Wool Coat is the stuff of dreams. Or, for a cheaper alternative, try this one from Miss Selfridge.
2. (Faux) Leather Puffer
Puffer jackets are back and bigger than ever. Only this time, they’ve evolved! 2021 is the year of the faux leather (or should I say, PU) puffer.
These are effortlessly stylish and can be dressed up or down depending on the occasion. The leather effect actually makes them look fashionable, rather than just functional, which (for me at least) is a huge selling point.
You can’t go wrong with this black NA-KD version – it looks super unique and snug. Perfect for wearing on your cold winter morning stroll.
3. Overshirt
I’ve seen these overshirts absolutely everywhere and I can’t get enough of them.
The best thing about the ‘shacket’ is that you can style it like a regular shirt, except it offers 10x times the warmth (don’t quote me on that figure).
A shacket is a key transitional piece and should take you through to spring or even summer (depending on where you live). I’m in the UK so, if you know anything about the weather here, I’ll probably still be wearing this in August.
This beige checked & Other Stories coat is probably my favourite. Although New Look has some that are waaay more affordable and just as cute.
4. Borg Jacket
I love a good borg jacket. They’re so so soft and offer an unbelievable amount of insulation. Literally, this is the snuggliest thing I own by far. There’s definitely a solid reason behind the ‘teddy bear’ moniker.
Borg is an animal-friendly alternative to shearling, and is super popular for this exact reason. You get all of the warmth and heat retention of sheepskin, but with the added benefit of it being completely vegan.
This Topshop Teddy Borg Jacket is right on trend. I love the tortoiseshell buttons as an added detail. This one from ASOS is also really stylish. The green panelling makes it look a bit more fun and interesting.
5. Trench Coat
Trench coats are another great piece to add to your capsule wardrobe. It would be a crime to create a list of the best women’s winter coats and omit this one.
Of course, the classic beige and camel trenches are as popular as ever. But why not mix it up and go for this brown leather-look coat?! Or perhaps, if you’re feeling extra adventurous, you could even try this olive vinyl option instead.
Again, these are great for transitioning into spring and look so chic when paired with a good pair of jeans and some chunky boots.
6. Quilted Coat
Quilted coats have had a serious upgrade in the past few years … and I’m not mad about it.
In theory, these are perfect. They’re thick, padded, and (more often than not) waterproof.
The only issue is whenever I wear one I always look like I’m about to go trekking around the Arctic. Not great!
Fortunately, I’ve discovered a bunch of quilted coats that are a little less bulky and, dare I say, actually quite flattering. This navy one from COS is a great longline option, as is this belted coat from & Other Stories.
So there you have it! A compact list of some of the best women’s winter coats for 2021. If you’re still searching for that perfect cold-weather piece, hopefully this has given you some inspo!
