Claw clips, or jaw clips, are no doubt the hair accessory of the year. Like many 90s trends, this has come back in full force … and it looks like it’ll be staying for quite a while. For many of us, however, using a claw clip isn’t as simple as seems. If, like me, your hair isn’t as thick as you’d like it to be, you’ll understand how much of a pain it is to find claw clips that work for fine hair.
Clips like these seem like they’re always slipping out or weighing your hair down. For ages I actually avoided wearing them because I felt like I was expending so much energy constantly fixing them!
But when I found claw clips that were suitable for my hair type this completely changed the game. Here are some of the jaw clips I love and how they work for fine hair…
My top claw clips for fine hair:
1. ASOS DESIGN Hair Claw in Lilac Resin
This cute pearlescent claw clip is ideal for half-up half-down hairstyles. It’s pretty small so it won’t hold a lot of hair, but I think this is what makes it perfect for those of us with fine hair.
I like that despite being sturdy it still looks delicate, and it always keeps my hair in place!
2. Lovisa Blue Coated Small Box Claw Clip
If you’re looking to throw all of your hair up, this claw clip needs to be your go-to. I often find that standard jaw clips are just way too big for the amount of hair I have. This one is big enough to hold all my hair in an up-do, but not so big that it doesn’t stay in.
I’ve also tried using this for a half-up look and, though it’s bigger than some of the other clips on this list, it actually works pretty well.
3. & Other Stories Butterfly Claw Clip
With its scalloped edge, this is pretty similar in shape to the lilac ASOS one above. The closure of this clip is a little more curved though, so I really feel like it has a tight grip on the hair.
The classic tortoiseshell finish means that it’s easy to style with most outfits too!
4. ASOS DESIGN Hair Clip Claw in Mono Resin
This claw clip has such a unique colour and shape. It’s also on the smaller side so it’s definitely suited to fine hair.
If your hair is super fine you could probably get away with using this for up-dos. If it’s slightly thicker this might only work for half-up hairstyles.
5. Lovisa Blue Flower Hair Claw Clip
This claw clip might be tiny but its grip is pretty impressive! This is one of my fave claw clips for fine hair since it really does have excellent staying power.
It’s deceiving because at first sight it looks quite flimsy. However, the size of the clip and the length of the spikes mean that this really locks into your hair.
Top tips to stop claw clips slipping out of fine hair:
USE CLEAR HAIRBANDS
My favourite trick to prevent claw clips slipping is to use a clear elastic band. This works primarily for half-up half-down hairdos where you’re creating a mini ponytail to keep the hair in place.
If you want you can leave your hair at this step and it still looks cute! However, I like to use a claw clip to hide the band and make the hairstyle look a bit more finished. This is seriously the best way I’ve found to stop claw clips falling out!
TRY CURLING YOUR HAIR
I often find that my hair tends to hold claw clips better when it has more volume. When it’s straight, the claw clip just slips right out. To avoid this I’ll either properly curl it with tongs or use the Dyson Airwrap to blow-dry curls into my hair. Since there is more texture for the clip to grip onto, it slides out less.
APPLY SOME HAIRSPRAY
Like the curling trick, this hack works by creating texture for the clip to latch onto. If you spray your hair with a bit of hairspray before putting the claw clip in, you’ll find that the clip slides out less. This method isn’t 100% foolproof though so I recommend trying the other two first. If you combine all three tips then your claw clip really won’t be going anywhere!
There are probably loads more claw clips that are great for fine hair, but these are the ones – out of my own collection – that I’ve found to work best! Let me know if you have any more recommendations I can add!
