With summer just around the corner, and lockdown nearing an end, it’s time to start thinking about something we’ve been neglecting for months: our hair. Here in the UK, the salons are only just opening back up, so now the pressure’s on to decide whether to dye our hair, bleach it or chop half of it off.
If all this sounds a little extreme, fear not as there are plenty of other ways we can refresh our look and level up our hair game. Accessories and clever hairstyles can also make such a difference to our appearance.
So, without further ado, here are 7 summer hair trends that you’ll see everyone trying out in 2021.
Scarf Braids
We’ve seen headscarfs a lot over the past few months – shoutout to the #pleasedontgo TikTok trend. This Hollywood glam look is pretty cute, but it’s also kind of difficult to style it with your everyday outfit. Luckily, there’s another popular hairstyle that’s entering the spring/summer scene: the scarf braid.
The idea is as it sounds. You take a scarf of your choice, and weave into your hair as you plait it. What I love about this summer hair trend is that it’s really versatile. You can choose to add it to your French plait, like the photo above, or fashion it into a braided ponytail – whatever takes your fancy!
This hairstyle definitely requires a bit of technique (and practice), but it looks so cute when it’s done.
Lovisa has some stunning hair scarves so I 100% recommend checking them out! I also love the headscarf selection from ASOS.
Feathered Layers
Long layers and curtain bangs are the ‘it’ style of the moment. Take it one step further for summer by feathering some of these layers. This will make your hair appear lighter and bouncier, while maintaining that full-bodied, voluminous look.
Pair this with a balayage or some lowlights and your hair will appear to have even more texture and dimension.
This style is perfect for the warmer months since it takes some of the weight off. You’ll definitely appreciate having airier hair when the temperature starts rising.
Bubble Ponytails
This is one of those summer hair trends that will take you back to your school days. It’s a fun, effortless look but it makes such a statement!
The simplicity of this hairstyle means that you can change it up depending on your choice of clothes for the day (or even your mood). You can keep it minimal with neutral toned elastics or liven up your outfit with some bright, colourful bands. Clear elastics are also a fab choice.
The bubble ponytail works on basically all hair types so it’s a great option to have on standby. Even on lazy days we sometimes still want it to look like we’ve made an effort 😆
Muted Pastels
Soft pinks and purples are classic summer colours. This year, however, the pastel trend seems to be even more subtle (if that’s possible!). Extremely muted looks, like the one above, are dominating the hair scene.
If you’re not sure you can commit to dying your hair, a toner is a great alternative. This rose kit, by Bleach London, helps to get rid of brassiness while providing a temporary pink tint. It’s the easiest (and probably cheapest) way to try this look out.
Oversized Accessories
The hair salon has been off limits to most of us over the past year. So naturally we’ve had to come up with new, creative ways to express ourselves. Enter oversized hair accessories.
Whether it’s claw clips or scrunchies, these pieces are a must for our summer wardrobe. They add a little bit of interest to any look and, thankfully, divert attention away from our faded colour and grown-out roots.
This XL lilac organza scrunchie from ASOS is one of my faves. It’s oversized, but not so heavy that it will pull or drag on the hair.

Knotted Low Bun
If you’re someone who leans towards glamorous yet low maintenance hairstyles, this twisted knot low bun is perfect for you. It looks super chic, but it’s still extremely suitable (and practical) to wear during the day.
With the warmer weather, you’ll want to keep your hair out of your face, so an up-do like this is the ideal solution. To soften it a little you can always tease out a couple of strands near the front. This will help frame the face and make your look a bit more casual.
Bouncy ’90s Bob
A bob might not be the first thing you think of when it comes to summer hair trends. But actually, the ’90s-inspired bob is set to be massive this year, with tonnes of people looking to chop off their quarantine locks.
Short hairstyles are amazing for the summer weather and will definitely keep you feeling cool (despite the blazing sun and hot temperatures). For that ’90s look, go for a chin-grazing, curled-under bob. It will give your hair way more body and bounce.
High Bunches
Pigtails are another playground classic … but that doesn’t mean that we can’t still wear them! This is a really cute hairstyle that is sure to make any outfit look a little more fun.
What I love about this is that it’s really easy to do – all you need are two elastic bands! Plus, bunches suit curly AND pin straight hair so this is something that everyone can try. If you’re feeling extra adventurous you can even add extra bands to create bubble pigtails. This way you’re nailing two summer hair trends in one look.
What do you think of these summer hair trends? Would you try any of them? Let me know!
