Slowly but surely I’ve been switching my usual makeup, skincare and haircare products to eco-friendly alternatives. What’s great about this process is that along the way I’ve been introduced to so many sustainable brands that I hadn’t heard of before – one of them being Rhyme & Reason.
I’d seen this brand advertised a couple of times, but hadn’t really looked into it much. After trying out the MONDAY Volume line though, I thought it would be cool to do a bit of a comparison.
So, let’s jump right into it! Here are my thoughts on the Rhyme & Reason Volume & Boost haircare range…
A bit about Rhyme & Reason
Rhyme & Reason is a UK-based haircare brand that’s passionate about creating products that are not only good for the hair, but good for the planet too.
They currently have five different ranges that each suit different hair needs: Colour Protect, Nourish & Gloss, Quench & Curl, Repair & Restore and Volume & Boost. As the title indicates, I’m going to be talking about the Volume & Boost range!
When it comes to brand values, Rhyme & Reason is:
- 100% vegan
- Cruelty-free
- Free of parabens
- Sulfate-free
What are the standout ingredients in the Volume & Boost range?
SHAMPOO AND CONDITIONER
Lactobacillus/Arundinaria Gigantea Ferment Filtrate – Fermented bamboo that has moisturising and free radical-fighting properties.
Betaine – An amino acid that helps prevent water loss from the skin.
Panthenol – A provitamin of vitamin B5. It boosts hydration, attracts moisture and soothes irritated skin.
CONDITIONER ONLY
Shea butter – A plant lipid that is used as an emollient. It has healing and anti-inflammatory properties.
Coconut oil – A plant-based oil that prevents protein loss in hair and helps protect it from damage.
Notes on sustainability
Being eco-friendly is a huge part of Rhyme & Reason’s branding, so it should come as no surprise that the packaging and the product itself are both super sustainable.
The bottles are made from 100% recycled plastic and can be fully recycled when finished. Plus, just like MONDAY, the Rhyme & Reason bottles are rectangular in shape so that they take up less space during transit.
On top of this, Rhyme & Reason’s formulas are 90% naturally derived with only a handful of synthetic ingredients used for stability.
1% of their yearly gross sales also goes towards environmental causes, so they’re really doing a lot for the planet 👏
My experience
I switched to the Rhyme & Reason Volume & Boost range straight after trying out the MONDAY Volume line, so I was really keen to see if there were any differences between the two.
Right off the bat, I was pretty surprised that the Rhyme & Reason products didn’t come with a pump (like the MONDAY ones do). The squeezy bottle works well for the shampoo, but because the conditioner is so thick it’s really difficult to get any product out.
In terms of scent, I actually quite like how the shampoo and conditioner smell. It’s sweet – almost like pear drops – but not at all sickly. It definitely smells stronger coming straight out of the bottle than it actually does on your hair!
Out of the two, I would say the conditioner is my preferred product. Despite being quite tricky to squeeze out of the bottle, it actually does a pretty good job of detangling hair and reducing frizz. The shampoo, on the other hand, has a tendency to make my hair feel a little dry. It also doesn’t lather very well which means I end up overusing product in an effort to really clean my hair.
On the plus side, the Rhyme & Reason Volume & Boost range does seem to give my hair a bit of body (once it’s dried). And I’ve noticed that it takes longer for my hair to get greasy too.
Final thoughts
While I really appreciate Rhyme & Reason’s values, I’m not 100% sure this product is for me. I loved the conditioner and did feel that it was really nourishing. But in combination with the shampoo, my hair started to get pretty dry (especially at the root). Though this did give it an extra bit of volume, it also meant that it was getting a bit more tangled than usual.
I also found that because the shampoo didn’t lather very well, it felt like I wasn’t able to properly work the product into my hair. I much preferred the MONDAY shampoo in this sense.
Overall, I still think these are good products and would probably work for other hair types. They just weren’t suited to me. If you’re looking to make an eco-friendly switch, I’d definitely look into the brand and maybe try out one of their other ranges.
Where can you buy Rhyme & Reason products?
You can pick this up at most major UK supermarkets i.e. Tesco and Sainsburys. Or you can order it from Amazon.
If you’re in the US, I believe you should be able to buy this from Target.
Have you tried any Rhyme & Reason products yet? Let me know your thoughts in the comments!

I tried rhyme and reason nourish and gloss shampoo for the first time last week, purely because it was on a knockdown shelf.
Well I was really surprised ,this shampoo was lovely, made my hair so shiny.
I don’t use conditioner as it makes my hair flat, but this shampoo did a wonderful job.I didn’t need conditioner anyway.
I was so pleased I decided to look this product up online.
Iam 69 years old and on my way to full remission from bowel cancer,so my health has not been great,of course this is reflected in my hair.
But Iam so glad I found this product and will be using it from now on.
It would be nice if there were small testers so then I could try the body shampoo as well, but as we all know we are watching the pennies.
But I will not be purchasing any other make fro. Now on.
Good luck with this venture.

Hi Louise, thanks so much for commenting! I’m so glad that the Nourish and Gloss line worked for you – it definitely seems that it’s a lot more gentle on the hair than the Volume one. After hearing your positive experience with it, I’ll have to give the Nourish and Gloss line a try 🙂
