Cleansing balms are my latest obsession. And, after trying out a few new releases, I felt like it was time to return to one of the originals: The Body Shop Camomile Sumptuous Cleansing Butter. There is only handful of products that I’ve deemed good enough to buy over and over again, and this is one of them! So, let’s see what makes it so great…
What is it?
The Body Shop Camomile Sumptuous Cleansing Butter is a plant-based balm that claims to melt away makeup and other impurities. It’s meant to be super gentle on sensitive skin as it contains a number of soothing ingredients like chamomile and shea butter.
What are the standout ingredients?
Olive oil – A plant oil that’s has antioxidant properties and is rich in fatty acids. It nourishes the skin and supports its moisture barrier.
Shea butter – A plant lipid that is used as an emollient. It has healing and anti-inflammatory properties.
Tocopherol – Pure form of vitamin E. It aids cellular restoration and protects skin from free radicals.
Sunflower seed oil – A non-comedogenic oil that is rich in vitamins, nutrients and antioxidants.
English/Roman chamomile – A herb that soothes the skin and reduces inflammation. Great for sensitive skin types.

The Body Shop Camomile Cleansing Butter Ingredients
Ethylhexyl Palmitate, Synthetic Wax, PEG-20 Glyceryl Triisostearate, Olea Europaea Fruit Oil, Butyrospermum Parkii Butter, Caprylyl Glycol, Tocopherol, Parfum, Aqua, Linalool, Limonene, Helianthus Annuus Seed Oil, Anthemis Nobilis Flower Extract, Citric Acid.
How should you use this product?
Take a small scoop of the product and massage it onto dry skin – I usually do this until I can see that all my makeup has broken down. Then rinse your face with warm water and gently wipe away the remaining cleansing balm using a soft washcloth. Use a second water-based cleanser, like the CeraVe Hydrating Cleanser, to properly clean the skin, making sure that all makeup and cleansing balm is gone.
How do I feel about…?
THE SCENT
The smell is fairly strong, but not in an artificial way. If I could describe it in one word, it would be ‘clean’. And that’s exactly it, I feel like it has a very fresh, natural scent that reminds me of clean laundry. I personally like this, although I don’t know if it would be to everyone’s taste.
Also, bear in mind that this product does contain quite a bit of fragrance, so if you’re sensitive to this you might want to patch test first.
THE TEXTURE
There was a reason that The Body Shop called this a cleansing butter, rather than a balm. It does have quite a rich, buttery consistency which initially seems like it’ll be really heavy on the face. However, as the cleansing butter warms, it melts down a little. So, strangely, it does feel like an oil once it’s on the skin.
THE PACKAGING
The packaging is pretty simple (which I actually quite like). It comes in a round, metal tin – the only decoration being the paper labels that are stuck to the front and back. The container is also a lot flatter than many other cleansing balms, so that makes it a little easier to store.
THE SUSTAINABILITY ASPECT
As with all The Body Shop products, this cleansing butter was obviously designed with sustainability in mind. The product itself is 100% vegan and cruelty free, and all of the ingredients are sourced responsibly. Packaging-wise, the metal tin and the paper label can both be recycled, so there’s no plastic waste involved here!
As a brand, The Body Shop leads so many important campaigns and projects that benefit their stakeholders, I couldn’t possibly include them all in this post! To save you the time searching, you can read more about their beliefs and values here.
Overall thoughts
The Body Shop Camomile Cleansing Butter is such an incredible product. This was actually the first cleansing balm I ever used and it’s the one I keep coming back to. I love the consistency and how gentle it feels on the skin. I don’t even get that much stinging if it goes into my eyes!
Despite the fragrance, I don’t find it to be irritating at all. I also haven’t experienced any issues with clogged pores or breakouts, though this could be because it doesn’t sit on the skin for very long. I was initially worried because the product was so thick. But, since it softens as it warms, the actual feeling of the balm on the face is very light.
I should also add that this product does an amazing job at removing makeup (even waterproof mascara!). I’ve yet to find another cleansing balm that works as well as this.
Plus, the tin is fairly large so it does last a long time. You only need a tiny bit of product to cleanse your face, so I would say that this could be used (on a regular basis) for at least 3 – 4 months.
Where can I buy it?
This cleansing butter can only be purchased directly from The Body Shop store or website. It’s £11.00 for 90ml of product and £5.00 for 20ml. The 20ml tin is veeeeery small though so I would definitely recommend buying the bigger size, it’s much better value!
