I’ve always been a bit lazy when it comes to haircare. If I have to choose between spending my money on hair products or skincare, 9 times out of 10 skincare is going to win. But, with a lot of time to spare during lockdown (and beyond), I decided to actually put some effort into my haircare routine.
Switching out my regular shampoo and conditioner, I wanted something that wasn’t too pricey but would still have high-quality ingredients. That’s when I discovered MONDAY Haircare!
A bit about MONDAY
MONDAY is a haircare brand founded by New Zealand entrepreneur Jaimee Lupton. Her goal when creating the brand was to make haircare more inclusive by offering luxury formulations at an affordable price point.
MONDAY currently sells four different ranges: SMOOTH, GENTLE, VOLUME and MOISTURE. Each has its own shampoo and conditioner and, of course, the ingredients list varies slightly depending on which range you decide to buy. The VOLUME range is the one I’m going to be reviewing in this post.
All MONDAY products are:
- Vegan
- Cruelty-free (and PETA certified)
- Free of parabens and SLS
What are the standout ingredients in the VOLUME range?
SHAMPOO AND CONDITIONER
Coconut oil – A plant-based oil that prevents protein loss in hair and helps protect it from damage.
Ginger root extract – A plant extract that is said to boost blood circulation and reduce inflammation.
CONDITIONER ONLY
Shea butter – A plant lipid that is used as an emollient. It has healing and anti-inflammatory properties.
Panthenol – A provitamin of vitamin B5. It boosts hydration, attracts moisture and soothes irritated skin.
Notes on sustainability
I looove the packaging and I was even more impressed to find out that it was designed to be environmentally-friendly. The bottles are made out of 20% recycled plastic and the rectangular shape means that they can be packaged together more tightly during transit.
All labelling is printed directly onto the bottle too, so there is no need for extra plastic labels that complicate the recycling process. It’s for this exact reason that the bottles (and the pumps) are 100% recyclable.
My hair type
For reference, it’s probably helpful to know that I have fine, straight hair that’s been colour-treated. I have had Olaplex treatments with my balayage though, so I don’t really suffer with frizziness or dryness. My main concern at the moment is the lack of volume – which is why I chose the VOLUME range.
My experience
I only purchased the VOLUME shampoo and conditioner so I can’t compare it to the other MONDAY Haircare products, but I have to say I was quite impressed with this range!
The shampoo and conditioner both have a fruity, floral scent that 100% appeals to me. I know some people don’t like their hair or body care products to smell sweet, but I’m definitely a fan. The scent is based on gardenia so it’s almost perfumy. Despite this, I wouldn’t say that it’s particularly strong and I don’t really think it’s obvious once the hair has dried. By the end of the day my hair doesn’t really smell like anything!
Moving onto design, I’m very grateful for the pumps. I hate having to squeeze out product when both my hands AND the bottle are wet and slippery – 90% of the time this leads to something being dropped. So, I think this is a much more effective (and safer) idea.
I also like that the pump is supposed to give you just the right amount of product. This means that you’re not overdoing or wasting it. One pump is a little small though, so I do generally end up using two pumps of both shampoo and conditioner.
Final thoughts
Overall, I’ve enjoyed using the MONDAY Haircare VOLUME range. The shampoo lathers well and it really feels like it’s cleaning your hair. I sometimes find that products which are described as ‘volume-boosting’ or ‘body-building’ can leave a residue, but I didn’t notice this with the MONDAY shampoo at all.
As for the conditioner, this might be even better than the shampoo! It’s so nourishing and it leaves my hair feeling really silky and soft.
Both products smell amazing (without being too overpowering) and I think they’re very reasonably priced given the quality.
I can’t say I’ve noticed much of a difference in regards to volume, but it certainly hasn’t made my hair any flatter. I would have liked to have seen a bit more body in my hair, however, I appreciate that there’s only so much a shampoo can do. I think you would need to use a selection of different products to get a decent amount of volume at the root.
If MONDAY expands their range and decides to branch out into oils, serums or treatments I would definitely be interested in trying these! The shampoo and conditioner are great but I’d love to supplement them with other hair styling products. With any luck we’ll hear more from the brand in the near future.
Where can you buy MONDAY products?
If you’re in the UK you can pick these up from Tesco. The shampoo and conditioner retails for £4 each.
Alternatively, you can order the shampoo and conditioner from Beauty Bay where each one is priced at £5.50.
