When a beauty brand has so much hype around it, it’s impossible not to be drawn in. So when Jones Road reached out and asked me to try a few bits, it didn’t take long before the products were at my doorstep and a review was on its way!
Founded by legendary makeup artist Bobbi Brown, Jones Road is all about ‘clean no-makeup makeup’. Makeup that doesn’t look like you’re wearing makeup, and doesn’t feel like it either.
We’ve all seen the brand’s viral What the Foundation buzzing around TikTok – I certainly couldn’t avoid it! But I wanted to know what else Jones Road had to offer… and it turns out quite a lot!
Jones Road has some really unique makeup products, and I knew I wanted to try out things that I wouldn’t typically buy (I’m looking at you Miracle Balm 👀), so testing them out was a lot of fun. In fact, I think this might be one of my favourite brand reviews so far!
If you’re looking for more info on Jones Road, and want an honest review before buying, I’ve got you covered. Keep on reading to discover my thoughts!
What is Jones Road?
Jones Road is a minimalistic beauty brand founded by makeup artist Bobbi Brown. After stepping down from her eponymous company in 2016, she wanted to create a new ‘strategic’ makeup collection that would work for all ages and all skin types.
The focus here is on simple, yet effective, multi-purpose products that are easy to use and feel great on the skin.
Jones Road Makeup Review:
Jones Road The Face Pencil
For the past few years I’ve almost exclusively used liquid concealers, so I was super excited to step out of my comfort zone and give the Jones Road Face Pencil a go. I’ve used stick concealers before, but never really got on with them as I felt they always looked a bit cakey and unnatural. I shouldn’t have worried because, in true Jones Road style, this is the most natural looking concealer stick I think I’ve ever tried!
The brand describes this as an ‘everything stick’ which can be used for hiding redness, minimising dark circles, and all-in-all adding a bit more coverage to areas that need it. The pencil is soft and creamy, and it glides onto the skin really easily – you don’t need to press down very hard for the product to work.
I’d describe it as a light to medium coverage concealer. It does cover some redness / darkness but it’s not going to mask it completely – I think this is partly what makes it look so natural. If you’re someone who usually goes for high coverage, you might find that this is not for you. I like it because it doesn’t tend to crease as much under my eyes as liquid formulas do, but I also don’t think covers my dark circles as effectively, so it’s a bit of a trade off.
For me, the best thing about the Jones Road Face Pencil is it’s portability – it’s just so easy to carry around. It’s not messy (why do all liquid concealers eventually end up leaking?!), it doesn’t need to go in a separate bag when you travel, and it doesn’t take up very much space at all. On top of this, you really only need your fingers to blend the concealer out, so it’s a great no-fuss option.
Oh, and I can’t forget to mention that this comes in 25 different shades!! If you’re unsure which one to choose, the Jones Road website has a full breakdown of the shades by undertone.
Jones Road Miracle Balm
The Jones Road Miracle Balm is a multi-purpose product that’s meant to give a soft glow to the skin. You can use it to highlight, bronze or add a subtle touch of colour to your cheeks.
To get the most out of this product, you’ll first have to ‘break the seal’. There’s no delicate way to do it, you basically just have to push your finger through the surface of the balm. It may feel like you’re ruining it but you’re not – trust me if you don’t break the seal it won’t be nearly as pigmented! Once you’ve done this, you’ll notice that the product will feel softer and creamier which will make it easier to blend.
I’ve got the shade ‘Dusty Rose’ which is a cool, light pink. It’s supposed to be suitable for ‘fair to medium skin’ but the colour is VERY subtle, even on my pale skin. If you want a pink shade that’s sure to show up, I’d go for ‘Flushed’ instead.
This balm contains nourishing ingredients like jojoba seed oil, castor seed oil and argan oil which provide moisture, but also leave the skin feeling a bit tacky. I don’t mind this too much but it’s something to bear in mind if you don’t like this kind of finish!
From other reviews I’ve seen, it seems this is a pretty divisive product. And I think this is mainly due to people having different expectations when they buy it. If you’re expecting this to work the same way that your current blush or bronzer does, you may be a little disappointed by the lack of pigment, but that’s because it’s not really intended to be a replacement for those products. It’s a versatile balm that’s supposed to add a subtle yet buildable tint, not a whole load of colour.
Here’s how/when I like to use the Jones Road Miracle Balm:
- To add a healthy glow to my skin when it’s looking a bit dull – tapping it onto my cheeks, tip of my nose, and just under my eyebrows instantly makes my skin look fresher and dewier.
- To add more dimension and softness to my face if I’ve overdone it with setting powder.
- To provide a base for powder blushes that aren’t super pigmented in themselves – the colour payoff is way better if there’s something for them to stick to!
Jones Road Lip and Cheek Stick
The Jones Road Lip and Cheek Sticks deserve WAY more hype – I haven’t heard many people talking about them and they’re SO good! First of all, I love the stick format. The fact that you can easily slip one of these into near enough any size handbag makes them ideal for touch ups on the go. Plus, it kind of just looks like a jumbo lipstick so you won’t be drawing too much attention to yourself if you reapply in public 👀
The formula is really creamy and I find these to be extremely blendable. Of course, like many other Jones Road products, this is slightly sheerer than the cream blushes you might be used to… but not massively so! I’ve got the shades ‘Bright Coral’ and ‘Mauve Rose’, both of which – on first try – were way more pigmented than I had expected (especially after using the Miracle Balm).
In total, there are eight different shades which are all designed to give a natural wash of colour to the lips and cheeks. I have to say, I mostly wear this as a blush because I don’t find it lasts quite as long on my lips (though the hydrating formula makes it suitable to be worn both ways).
The finish of this product is dewy yet natural, and it doesn’t leave any stickiness on the skin like the Miracle Balm does. You may need to apply a few layers to get your desired colour but each application doesn’t disturb the makeup underneath. Overall, this is a really solid (and convenient) product which I’ve enjoyed adding into my current makeup routine.
Jones Road The Bronzer
The Bronzer is one of the few matte products you’ll find in Jones Road’s beauty offering. This isn’t dewy or sparkly, but that’s not to say it doesn’t pack a punch in the pigment department. You can build up quite a bit of colour in just a few swipes so don’t go in too heavy handed. I advise using a big, fluffy brush to evenly distribute the product… and watch out for the kick-up because the powder does tend to loosen pretty easily in the pan!
I’ve got the shade ‘Light Tan’ which is maybe a little too warm for me, but this bronzer is really easy to diffuse so it’s not a big deal if I apply a little too much. It’s kind of hard to tell what the lightest bronzer shade is because ‘Dusty Rose’ is decidedly pink-toned, which strikes me as more of a blush-type product, though I totally get how it’s meant to give that soft, sun-kissed look. For clarity, ‘Light Tan’ is the lightest warm-toned shade on offer.
In terms of texture, this bronzer is super finely milled so it sweeps onto the skin pretty seamlessly. It doesn’t look patchy and it’s really easy to build up colour if you want a super bronzed look. I like that this looks natural no matter how much product you apply – though ‘Light Tan’ is perhaps a shade above what I’d usually go for, it’s not at all orange!
Jones Road The Mascara
I’m extremely picky about mascaras – it’s the one makeup product I very rarely switch up. And unfortunately, Jones Road’s The Mascara is a bit of a miss for me. This is mainly down to personal preference though, it’s just not the type of mascara I’d usually go for!
I’m very much a ‘thin wand, thin formula’ kinda gal, but the Jones Road mascara is the complete opposite. The consistency is thick and inky which, on the one hand, is great because it doesn’t take much to coat the lashes. On the other hand, it makes the mascara quite messy to apply.
It feels like it takes a lot of work to get it on evenly without clumps or smudging. It’s definitely not the fuss-free, ‘a couple of swipes and you’re good’ formula I was expecting.
I was hoping for something minimal like Glossier’s Lash Slick which feels super light and looks very natural – it only slightly enhances the lashes. But the Jones Road The Mascara is much more intense and volumising.
I know lots of people will like this product, it’s just not for me!
Jones Road Tinted Face Powder
I always thought a tinted face powder had to match your skin tone, but this product completely tips that on its head. I never expected a bright pink powder to be the one that suits me best!
This is finely milled and super lightweight. It minimises shine but doesn’t make the skin feel tight or dry. I like how natural it looks and that it’s not obvious you’re wearing a setting powder, there’s no cakiness or chalkiness here at all.
This is a definite ‘your skin but better’ type of product. The powder mattifies but not in a way that makes the particles sink into your pores and accentuate them. You just get a really soft, blurred finish.
Going back to the shade range, I picked up Pink which is for light to medium skin tones. I wouldn’t necessarily say it works as a colour corrector for me, as my skin is on the pinker side anyway, but it’s definitely sympathetic and it really helps brighten up my complexion.
Jones Road Review: Final verdict
I really love that Jones Road is stepping outside of the box and experimenting with new colours, textures and formulas. You might expect a natural, no-makeup brand targeted at mature skin to play it safe, but I think the products are really fun and innovative. Proof that no-makeup makeup doesn’t have to be boring!
The best Jones Road products for me are The Bronzer, the Lip and Cheek Stick and the Tinted Face Powder. They’ve made it into my everyday makeup routine, which actually takes quite a lot to do!
So, is Jones Road worth it? I think so. I’m all for a makeup collection that has all the benefits of skincare, and the formulations here are really elegant. I was impressed by almost all of the items I tried. And, with so many ‘out there’ products (like the Miracle Balm and What the Foundation), Jones Road has really reignited that excitement that you used to get from new makeup launches. I’m itching to see what’s next!
