Under eye masks are quick remedy for tired-looking skin. Pop on a couple of patches and watch that dryness and puffiness disappear.

Whether you want a pre-makeup pick-me-up or a soothing self-care moment, eye patches are perfect for any occasion…

But they’re not always perfect for every skin type.

To evoke that relaxing feeling, many of these masks are loaded with essential oils and other fragrance ingredients.

While this may not be a problem for most, in can be a potential cause of sensitivity and irritation for others, which is why some people choose to avoid fragrance in skincare entirely.

I’d actually been on the hunt for fragrance-free under eye patches myself, and couldn’t find much info. It seemed product round-ups of this type were seriously lacking.

I ended up scrolling through individual product pages and ingredients lists to try to figure out which eye masks fit the bill.

And I didn’t want to waste all that time spent researching, so I thought I’d share my findings here!

If you’re interested in discovering some new fragrance-free eye patch options, keep reading.

Why go fragrance-free?

First things first, you don’t need to avoid fragrance in skincare if it’s not an irritant for your skin. Many people use scented skincare products every day without any issues at all!

But if your skin is particularly reactive or sensitive, you may find that fragrance ingredients can cause redness or stinging, especially around delicate areas like your eyes.

If you suffer from irritation when using fragranced skincare, you might want to consider shopping for fragrance-free alternatives – I’ll explain how you can identify these below.

How to spot fragrance in eye patches

When a product has a huge ingredients list – I’m talking a chunky, never-ending paragraph – it can feel like a bit of a chore to scan through and find the specific ingredients that are causing irritation.

With fragrance ingredients, though, there are a few little tips you can use to spot them.

Crucially, you’re most likely to find fragrance at the bottom of an ingredients list. This is because the concentration in the formula is very low (it’s surprising just how sensitising a small amount can be!).

You also want to look out for citrus or botanical oils, especially the ones you already associate with having a strong scent e.g. Tea Tree, Peppermint, Lavender, Orange.

Then, we’ve got our tell-tale fragrance ingredients like Limonene and Linalool. These are commonly found in fragranced formulas and, if you’re familiar with the names, you’ll quickly learn how to spot if a product is scented or not.

Finally, a product might just list ‘Fragrance’ as an ingredient. In which case, there’s no decoding to be done at all!

Best Fragrance-Free Eye Patches

1. ESPA Isotonic Hydra Gel Eye Masks

Key ingredients: Red Algae, Snow Mushroom, Spirulina Platensis Extract,

Price: £46 / $91 for 60 patches (30 pairs)

For a real self-care treat, the ESPA Isotonic Hydra Gel Eye Masks feel super luxurious and relaxing. I’ve actually got a whole blog post where I’ve reviewed the ESPA patches and the Isotonic Face Mask, so definitely check that out if you’re interested in learning more!

What really stands out to me about these patches is just how interesting the ingredients list is. There are a whole host of natural extracts in here that I’ve never seen (or tried) in any other skincare product.

This product comes with tweezers you can use to separate and pick up the patches. My only gripe with this is that the tweezers actually don’t fit under the lid very well. You really have to screw the lid on tight to press the tweezers down and stop the eye masks from drying out!

2. ABIB PDRN Retinal Eye Patch Glow Jelly

Key ingredients: Niacinamide, Allantoin, Adenosine, Panthenol, Squalane, Arginine, Vegan PDRN Cica, Retinal

Price: £20 / $23 for 60 patches (30 pairs)

If the first thing you do when choosing a new skincare product is head to the ingredients list, then the ABIB PDRN Retinal Eye Patch Glow Jelly definitely won’t disappoint.

These eye patches are jam packed with exciting and effective ingredients. From everybody’s anti-ageing favourite retinal, to the current trending ingredient on the skincare scene, PDRN.

ABIB actually uses a vegan form of PDRN, though, making this product completely vegan and cruelty-free.

With their non-slip embossed surface, these eye patches are meant to stay firmly in place – great for wearing on the go.

3. Mixsoon Bean Hydrogel Eye Patch

Key ingredients: Niacinamide, Allantoin, Panthenol, Arginine, Soybean, Pomegranate Enzyme, Barley Seed Ferment Filtrate, Pear Juice Ferment Filtrate, Hydrolyzed Pea Protein

Fans of fermented skincare will love Mixsoon’s Bean Hydrogel Eye Patch. This contains four fermented ingredients – Bean, Barley, Pomegranate and Pear – which quickly absorb into the skin and get to work.

Applying these masks for just 30 minutes a day will help reduce dehydration lines and improve skin elasticity.

Plus, why not pair these eye patches with the viral Mixsoon Bean Essence for double the hydration?

4. Good Molecules Caffeine Energizing Hydrogel Eye Patches

Key ingredients: Niacinamide, Caffeine, Allantoin, Hyaluronic Acid, Aloe, Green Tea, Arginine

Price: £16.50 / $18 for 60 patches (30 pairs)

With caffeine as the powerhouse ingredient, these Good Molecules Caffeine Energizing Hydrogel Eye Patches are designed to brighten and energise the under-eye area.

If you’ve not got your full eight hours, and want something to make you look a little more awake, these are an amazing way to de-puff your eyes and make you look a little less tired.

For an extra cooling sensation, pop the eye masks in the fridge before you use them – this’ll make them feel ever more refreshing!

5. Pyunkang Yul Black Tea Time Reverse Eye Patch

Key ingredients: Niacinamide, Black Tea, Allantoin, Soybean Extract, Green Tea, Hyaluronic Acid

Price: £17.50 for 60 patches (30 pairs)

The Pyunkang Yul Black Tea Time Reverse Eye Patch is a pretty interesting product. There’s no flashy packaging – the jar is black and the patches themselves are matte black too. Despite that, it still manages to catch your eye!

These eye patches are powered by Black Tea – which is perhaps why Pyunkang Yul have gone for the black packaging. They’re also formulated with Hyaluronic Acid and Ceramides to keep the under-eye skin moisturised.

6. Beauty of Joseon Revive Under Eye Patch Ginseng and Retinal

The Beauty of Joseon Revive Under Eye Patches may just be the most adorable hydrogel eye masks I’ve ever seen. Not only are they pearlescent and shimmery, they’re also shaped like angel wings!

If you’re already a fan of the Beauty of Joseon Revive Eye Serum, you’re sure to love its sister product as it contains a similar set of plant-based ingredients.

We’ve got Ginseng Root Water to brighten tired eyes, Retinal and Bakuchiol to firm the skin, and a selection of other skin-plumping ingredients, like Argireline and Beta-Glucan.

7. COSRX The Peptide Collagen Hydrogel Eye Patch

Key ingredients: Niacinamide, Adenosine, Caffeine, Vitamin B12, Panthenol

Price: £24.99 for 60 patches (30 pairs)

These pink Peptide Collagen Hydrogel Eye Patches from COSRX have some serious claims behind them. They’re meant to reduce puffiness in just 10 minutes, and improve the appearance of fine lines in two weeks.

Though these are primarily eye patches, COSRX recommends using them on really any area that needs some TLC: the forehead, nasolabial folds, and even the neck.

To save you looking through the whole ingredients list, all the key ingredients are helpfully pasted across the front of the jar. There is one extra ingredient I think is worth a mention though. This product contains four different forms of Hyaluronic Acid, so it has some serious hydrating power!

8. Grace & Stella Illuminating Blue Eye Masks

Key ingredients: Niacinamide, Allantoin, Hyaluronic Acid, Cica, Green Tea, Rosemary Leaf Extract

Price: £21 / $26 for 48 patches (24 pairs)

You might be pleased to know that all Grace & Stella eye masks are fragrance-free! I wanted to dive into the blue ones in particular though, because I really liked the look of the ingredients list.

These contain a bunch of calming, hydrating ingredients to bring down puffiness, and to keep the under eye area fresh and revitalised.

I’m not so keen on the fact that each pair of patches comes in its own little sachet – it feels like a lot of plastic waste. But it is pretty handy if you just want to stick one or two pairs in a handbag or overnight bag.

9. Pixi + Hello Kitty AnyWhere Patches

Key ingredients: Niacinamide, Caffeine, Green Tea, Retinol, Hyaluronic Acid, Ceramides

Price: £22 for 90 patches

A new addition to my under eye mask collection, and one I’m very excited to share! I’m currently testing some bits from the Pixi + Hello Kitty collection and these eye patches are definitely one of the standout products.

I should correct myself as these aren’t just eye patches, they’re AnyWhere Patches, meaning you can use them wherever your skin needs a boost of hydration.

These Pixi + Hello Kitty patches are split into three segments that you can place all around your face, essentially building your own hydrogel face mask.

You get 90 patches in here, as well as a little green spatula to help you apply them. The spatula sits right on the inner lid keeping everything compact and super portable.
