With sandal season quickly approaching, our feet are in dire need of some TLC. After spending months tucked away in boots and trainers, they’ve been a little neglected. So it’s finally time to give our feet the attention they deserve.
If you’re looking for ways to get the baby soft feet of your dreams, you’ve come to the right place. Keep reading to find out how you can give yourself the perfect at-home pedicure.
Foot care routine for silky, soft feet:
1. Cut your nails
The first step to getting summer-ready feet is to prep them properly. Start by removing any old nail polish and then trim your toenails. I prefer to use clippers to do this, but a pair of nail scissors works well too!
It’s super important to cut your nails when they’re dry, as this prevents any damage from occurring. Wet nails are more likely to tear or break and we understandably want to avoid this, so save the water for the next step.
To keep the nails smooth and even, you might also want to go in with a nail file. This just helps to soften the edges and prevent any snagging.
2. Soak your feet
This next bit probably takes the longest but, if you do it right, it’ll make the following steps way more effective. To soften your feet, you’re going to soak them in warm water for around 10-15 minutes. I’d usually just do this in the bath, however, you could use a foot spa if you prefer.
Then, take a foot scrub of your choosing and massage it into your feet, making sure to go in between the toes too. It sounds gross but it’s really important hehe! If you’re looking for recommendations, this peppermint scrub by The Body Shop is my fave.
3. Slough away dead skin
Next, take a pumice stone or foot file and, in circular motions, gently buff the soles of your feet. This will remove thickened skin and reduce the size of any calluses.
Be careful not too rub too hard as you’ll make your feet sore. A light amount of pressure should be enough to reveal the baby soft skin underneath.
4. Take care of your cuticles
Just as you would with your fingernails, you’re going to want to apply a cuticle remover and carefully push back the cuticles. This will mean that your nail polish goes on more cleanly and looks a little neater.
You can use a cuticle pusher to reveal more of the nail plate, but don’t push back too far. We want to avoid pain and infection at all costs!
Apply a cuticle oil and then you’re ready for the next step.
5. Apply foot cream
To reach full softness potential we need to do one critical last thing: moisturise. This is a step that you can do basically everyday and you’ll reap the benefits almost immediately. Honestly, it makes such a difference!
I would advise going for a moisturiser that’s aimed specifically at feet, as these tend to be thicker and more softening. I love the Soap & Glory Heel Genius. Since it’s minty, it compliments The Body Shop foot scrub really well.
Apply your cream generously, slip on a pair of cotton socks and let your feet soak up the moisture overnight. I really recommend buying moisture socks solely for this purpose. They’re much more breathable than regular socks so they’re way nicer to sleep in.
6. Paint your nails
After all this I normally wait a day or so to paint my nails. This is just personal preference but I like to give my feet a chance to breathe before I start the process again.
If you’re not planning to leave your moisturiser on overnight, feel free to paint your nails immediately after you’ve rubbed all the product in.
And that’s it! Your foot care routine is completed!
