When it comes to drugstore makeup, e.l.f really does reign supreme. Affordable products that work just as well as their high end counterparts? Sign me up!
I recently reviewed their new Halo Glow Skin Tint so if you haven’t read that already, definitely go check that out.
But today I wanted to chat about an elf product that’s been around a little while longer: their Glow Reviver Tinted Lip Oil.
This has been touted as a dupe for the Dior Addict Lip Glow Oil, which in itself has a bit of a cult following – and not just due to the packaging!
Having tested both the e.l.f Glow Reviver Lip Oil and the Dior Addict Lip Glow Oil, I thought it would be fun to do a bit of a comparison. And, of course, to share my thoughts on e.l.f’s Lip Oil in its own right.
From pigment to packaging, here’s everything you need to know about the e.l.f Glow Reviver Lip Oil.
What is the e.l.f Glow Reviver Lip Oil?
e.l.f’s Glow Reviver Lip Oil is a tinted gloss-like lip oil which is meant to hydrate and enhance your lips.
It imparts a sheer wash of colour, meaning it can be worn on its own or as a lipstick topper.
Shade Range
This lip oil comes in ten different shades from Crystal Clear which is, you guessed it, a colourless oil, through to Hot as Fudge, a warm, rich brown.
I’ve got a shade for each season; Pink Quartz for spring, Red Delicious for summer, Honey Talks for autumn and Rose Envy for winter. Of course, that’s not a hard rule – you wear any shade any time of year!
If you’re a glitter fan, you’ll be pleased to know that e.l.f also have a ‘Glimmer’ version of this lip oil. The shade range is slightly smaller but there’s still quite a good selection.
There’s also a plumping formula – with a more vibrant shade line-up – if that’s more your thing too!
Packaging
E.l.f’s Tinted Lip Oil comes in a pretty standard lip gloss container. It’s housed in a plastic tube with a black cap. Attached to the cap is an oversized doe-foot applicator.
It’s not super fancy but I don’t think the packaging of a lip oil or gloss needs to be, as long as it does the job… Unfortunately, though, it doesn’t do the job!
I have four of these lip oils now and each one of them has leaked, which is way too much for it to be a one-off design fault.
I thought this might be because I was storing them flat but even when I started storing them upright, the product just goes everywhere!
I don’t tend to take them on the go with me because they can be a little unpredictable, and I want to avoid lip oil spillages in my handbag if I can help it!
Application
As I said above, this has a fairly decent sized doe-foot applicator. This means you can get the oil on your lips in just a couple of swipes. Super easy!
Texture, scent & feel
I’m a big fan of how this feels on the lips. It’s nourishing and hydrating without feeling at all sticky. It’s not overly oily or greasy either.
To be honest, it does lean towards being a lip gloss, rather than a lip oil. But it doesn’t have the same gloopiness that glosses usually possess. It’s a little lighter and more comfortable to wear.
Scent-wise, the e.l.f Glow Reviver Tinted Lip Oil is a pretty good match for the Dior one. It’s also mint-flavoured so it does have that slight tingly feeling when you apply it.
Pigment & swatches
As is the nature of lip oils, this product is very sheer. In fact, there’s very little pigment to the lighter shades like Pink Quartz and Red Delicious.
Once they’re on the lips, I don’t think the difference between them is that noticeable either. In hindsight I wouldn’t have bought both!
In fact, I think this pretty much applies to the first four shades of the e.l.f Glow Reviver Lip Oil – the colour is so sheer that you don’t need more than one. Instead, I’d go for something light and then something a bit deeper like Jam Session or Hot as Fudge.
See below for swatches!
Longevity
The wear time of the e.l.f Lip Oil isn’t bad. I can get a good couple of hours out of it if I’m not eating or drinking in between.
Since there isn’t much pigment to it, you don’t have to worry so much about the colour wearing off, it’s just the glossy finish that tends to disappear quite quickly.
If I’m out and about I’d definitely want to keep this lip oil on hand to reapply, but the faulty packaging makes it impossible to do that!
Where you can buy it
You can shop the e.l.f Glow Reviver Lip Oil directly from the e.l.f website. Or pick it up alongside some of your other drugstore faves at Boots, Superdrug or Ulta.
It’s £9 for 7.6ml (0.25oz) which is pretty reasonable for a formula of this quality.
If you want to complete your lip look, I definitely recommend grabbing one of e.l.f’s Cream Glide Lip Liners too. They’re only £4 ($3) and really complement the lip oils. A must if you’re looking for an extra bit of pigment and definition.
Final thoughts: Is the e.l.f Glow Reviver Tinted Lip Oil worth buying?
I do really love this lip oil formula. It’s moisturising, really comfortable to wear and smells amazing.
I also think the shade selection is great, though I do think the lip oils could afford to be more pigmented. If you’re looking for something that packs a bit more of a punch in the pigment department, I would suggest the Clarins Lip Comfort Oils instead.
The one real let down for me is the leaky packaging. It’s a bit of a nightmare to have to clean them up all the time. Plus, they’re the type of product that I’d love to be able to chuck in my bag for touch-ups throughout the day. But I obviously can’t do that without creating a mess!
Once e.l.f is able to fix this, I’ll be fully on board!
Have you tried the e.l.f Glow Reviver Tinted Lip Oil yet? If not, which shade would you be tempted to get first? Let me know in the comments!
