You might be used to drinking kombucha but have you ever thought about putting it on your face?
Me neither until I came across this product!
Dr. Ceuracle’s Vegan Kombucha Tea Essence piqued my interest just by the name alone. This is the first time I’ve seen kombucha being used in skincare and I was really curious as to what the benefits are.
A quick search showed me that actually there are quite a few other brands who have incorporated kombucha into their skincare offering. Youth to the People do a kombucha resurfacing peel, Fresh have a kombucha cleanser and essence duo, and MEDI-PEEL make a Kombucha Tea-Tox Toner.
What makes the Dr. Ceuracle’s Vegan Kombucha Tea Essence special then? Let’s investigate…
What is it?
The Dr. Ceuracle Vegan Kombucha Tea Essence is a bi-phase milky essence which has the feel of a toner but provides all the nourishment of a moisturiser.
It’s lightweight yet super hydrating, helping to rejuvenate dry, barrier-impaired skin in just one layer.
Key ingredients
Dr. Ceuracle’s kombucha essence is powered by their signature Vegan Tea Complex, but figuring out what’s actually in this complex proved a little tricky!
Trailing through their social media, it seems like the tea complex consists of the following:
- Green Tea Leaf Extract – A well-researched skincare ingredient that has been to shown to have anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and antimicrobial properties.
- Green Tea Leaf Water – Possesses the same benefits as the extract above.
- Saccharomyces Ferment Filtrate – This is essentially the ‘kombucha element’ of the essence. It’s made by fermenting yeast and is great for moisturising, softening and soothing the skin.
- Schisandra Chinensis Fruit Extract – Otherwise known as Magnolia Fruit Extract. This is rich in lignans which help calm the skin and reduce redness.
This essence also includes bonus ingredients like:
- Sunflower Seed Oil – A ‘non-comedogenic’ (I know this is a contentious term!) oil which prevents moisture loss and reduces skin irritation.
- Sodium Hyaluronate – The salt form of hyaluronic acid. It hydrates the skin and smooths out fine lines.
- Centella Asiatica – A plant extract that soothes and hydrates the skin.
- Ceramide NP – A lipid that naturally occurs in the skin. It helps strengthen the skin’s moisture barrier and improves hydration too.
How should you use it?
First things first, you’re going to want to give the bottle a good shake. This way you’ll enjoy the benefits of both parts of the bi-phase formula – the product only reaches its full potential once combined!
I recommend applying this to slightly damp skin after cleansing. If your skin is very dry (like mine), you might want to go in with a hydrating toner first and use this essence as a second step.
Alternatively, you can just apply multiple layers of the Dr. Ceuracle essence to really lock in moisture!
Oily or normal skin types might find that this kombucha essence alone is sufficiently hydrating. Drier skin types will likely need to go in with a moisturiser afterwards.
Scent
This doesn’t contain any fragrance or essential oils so it doesn’t have a discernible scent.
Texture
This is definitely lighter than other ‘milky’ essences I’ve tried. It pours like a toner and is pretty watery, meaning it dries down quickly and layers well with other skincare ingredients.
Though it does feel slightly tacky on initial application, the final finish is actually quite soft and satiny.
Hydrating toners and essences can often leave the skin feeling a bit sticky but, don’t worry, you’re safe with this one!
Packaging
Dr. Ceuracle has really nailed it with the packaging of this kombucha essence. It looks luxe but it’s not super extravagant. The focus is really on the essence itself, not the casing around it!
The bottle is made of frosted glass which perfectly showcases the unactivated oil and water layers of the bi-phase formula.
It’s fun just to shake it up and watch the two compositions emulsify!
Overall thoughts
I had a feeling I was going to like the Dr. Ceuracle Vegan Kombucha Tea Essence even before I tried it… and I’m so glad I was right.
It’s really hard to fault anything about this essence. It’s light, non-sticky and fragrance-free. It’s also pretty accessible for us UK-based K-beauty fans and reasonably priced too. I wouldn’t go as far as to say affordable (there are drugstore essences that are more pocket-friendly) but price-wise it’s certainly comparable to other Korean essences on the market!
In terms of results, I can only speak from my experience as someone with dry-combination skin. What’s really noticeable to me, after using this for quite a while, is that my face really doesn’t feel that tight or rough anymore.
I usually have to apply a few layers of different toners and serums to achieve a level of hydration that makes my skin feel comfortable. With the Dr. Ceuracle Kombucha Essence, one layer does the job!
Considering how light it is, I didn’t expect it to be so hydrating and I can definitely see how oily skin types could forgo moisturiser altogether after using this.
I’ve been after something that could make my dry, dull skin look more healthy and hydrated and this definitely achieves it. If you’re looking to balance and rejuvenate your skin, I definitely recommend giving this essence a go!
Where can I buy it?
You can grab the Dr. Ceuracle Vegan Kombucha Tea Essence from a good number of UK beauty stores like Superdrug, Skinsider and PURESEOUL.
