Dermatica’s skincare offering is rapidly expanding and, as someone who owns nearly all of their existing products, I can’t say I’m disappointed by that!
Their newest release is a vitamin C cream, which I think is the perfect product to round off their ‘everyday essentials’ collection.
You may already be familiar with Dermatica since their retinoid treatments are pretty popular. But, if you’re not, here’s a quick bit of background…
Dermatica is a UK-based online dermatology service that creates science-based skincare products with the help of medical experts. They’re particularly known for their personalised formulas which target skin concerns like acne scars, melasma and rosacea.
Aside from this, though, they have a really great selection of products that can be used in tandem with the personalised treatments… or completely on their own!
The Dermatica Vitamin C: Fresh Batch Ascorbic Acid is one of them!
What is the Vitamin C Fresh Batch Ascorbic Acid ?
Dermatica’s Fresh Batch Ascorbic Acid is an antioxidant cream that’s supposed to promote collagen production, protect the skin from sun damage, and brighten the complexion.
With daily use, each tube of this stuff is designed to last you a month.
What does ‘fresh batch’ mean?
Ascorbic acid is notoriously unstable and quickly degrades when exposed to light, air and heat.
In order for you to get the most out of this product, Dermatica produces their vitamin C cream in small batches which are shipped out quickly. This ensures that the product doesn’t lose its potency and arrives at your door as fresh as possible.
How to use it
Applying Dermatica’s vitamin C cream should be the penultimate step of your morning skincare routine.
Ideally it should be sandwiched between your moisturiser and sunscreen. However, if you’ve got oily skin, you might want to skip moisturiser altogether and apply this onto freshly cleansed/toned skin.
One to two pumps is the recommended amount. I’d start with one and then add a bit more if you feel like that wasn’t sufficient to cover your face. It can get a bit sticky if you go in with too much straight away. More on that later!
Ingredients
Vitamin C is the main ingredient, but it isn’t the only ingredient! Check out the key ingredients below:
- Ascorbic acid – The pure form of vitamin C. It boosts collagen, targets signs of ageing and reduces hyperpigmentation.
- Ferulic acid – Fights off free radicals and helps stabilise vitamin C.
- Arginine – An amino acid that hydrates and promotes wound healing.
- Sodium hyaluronate – The salt form of hyaluronic acid. It attracts moisture and smooths out fine lines.
- Ceramides NP, AP and EOP – Lipids that protect the skin barrier.
Texture & feel
This has a thickish, gel-like consistency which spreads nicely into the skin. It’s white in colour so it’s pretty imperceptible, and it doesn’t have a scent (at least as far as I can tell!).
The formula is water-based so it doesn’t have that oily, greasy quality that many vitamin C products tend to have. And it feels quite hydrating – I can see why Dermatica says you can skip out on moisturiser with this!
The one downside for me is that this does feel quite tacky, even after it has dried down a little. It’s one of those products that feels like it’s sitting on top of the skin rather than absorbing fully.
Results
It’s fair to say that Dermatica’s vitamin C cream provides great results with very minimal irritation. 10% to 20% is the clinically recommended concentration of ascorbic acid and this sits slap bang in the middle of that.
Because this feels quite gentle, it’s been easy to incorporate it into my daily skincare routine. I’ve seen more significant results with this product than I have other vitamin C products in the past simply because I like the formula and I’ve been more consistent with it.
My skin looks less dull since I’ve started using it and it seems as though post-acne marks have been fading more quickly than usual, though this could be due to tretinoin use as well.
It’s hard to tell whether this has made my skin look more plump and youthful (vitamin C is meant to be a powerful anti-ageing ingredient). But I do think that it looks healthier just because it looks brighter!
Final verdict
Overall, I think Dermatica has done well with this vitamin C formula. It’s more lotion-like than any other vitamin C product I’ve tried and – with the addition of hyaluronic acid and ceramides – it feels like it’s really nourishing the skin.
Of course, this is primarily a vitamin C cream, but I think it could actually replace a couple of other products in your skincare routine. You won’t need an extra ceramide cream, for example, if you’ve got this!
However, one thing I will say is that, while this layers well with other skincare products, I find it quite difficult to apply makeup over the top.
You have to be really careful not to pull on the skin as you apply cream/liquid makeup products since you don’t want to cause any patchiness or separation. There have been a few occasions where I’ve had to take everything off and start again!
I do really like wearing this on no-makeup days though and maybe I just need to find the right makeup products to sit on top!
Where can I buy the Dermatica vitamin C cream?
You can order this directly from the Dermatica website. It’s £15.50 for 12.5ml which should last you a whole month. Using my code SUMMERSTUDY2 gets you 10% off.
If you already have a personalised formula subscription with Dermatica, you can save a bit extra by adding this onto your monthly delivery. Doing this cuts the price by 20%, so you’re paying £12.50 instead of the full £15.50.
FAQs
How will I know when this has expired?
When Dermatica’s vitamin C cream first arrives, you’ll notice that it’s white and translucent. When the product is past its use-by date, it’ll turn a more vibrant orange shade. This will obviously be quite quite gradual so I’d just keep an eye out for any noticeable changes in colour! It’s still safe to use but won’t be as effective.
Can I use this if I’m also using tretinoin?
You can use vitamin C and tretinoin on the same day, but they can’t be applied in the same skincare routine. You should use vitamin C in the morning, and tretinoin in the evening.
