Lip oils are the makeup product of the moment. In fact, there were so many lip oil launches last year that I could barely keep up!
The Clarins Lip Comfort Oil, though, has been around for quite some time and has already built up a cult following.
Before trying it, I often wondered what all the hype was about. There are so many drugstore lip oils that are killing it at the moment, it hardly seems necessary to splurge on a luxury one. I’ve actually got a whole comparison post where I give my verdict on viral lip oils and explain whether or not they’re worth buying.
But… I actually do think the Clarins Lip Comfort Oil is worth the spend. Here’s why…
What is it?
The Clarins Lip Comfort Oil is a nourishing tinted lip oil that’s meant to plump and protect the lips. It offers a sheer wash of colour and a high-shine finish.
It’s also made up of 93% naturally-derived ingredients, including a handful of organic, responsibly sourced plant oils like jojoba oil, rosehip seed oil and hazelnut oil which hydrate and revitalise the lips.
Clarins first launched this product in 2015, but – if you were a fan of the original – you may have noticed a few changes in its appearance. In 2022, the brand revamped the lip oil, changing up the packaging and adding a few more skin-loving ingredients into the formula.
Feel & finish
The Clarins Lip Comfort Oil is rich and moisturising without feeling sticky or heavy. It’s not one of those ‘lip oils’ which feels more like a gloss.
The finish is super shiny and it really leaves your lips feeling healthy and hydrated, which is exactly what you want from a luxury lip oil!
Scent
In my experience, most lip oils are either sweet or minty. I don’t really have a preference, though I know some people do!
The Clarins Lip Oils fall into the sweet category. These are fresh and fruity, but not in a cloying, artificial way. I really like the scent so I find myself reaching for these quite often!
Application
Because of the chubby wand, applying this lip oil couldn’t be any easier. It takes one to two swipes to get a good covering of product over the lips, but you can always apply more if you want a truly mirror-like finish.
Shade range & swatches
Clarins’ Lip Comfort Oil currently comes in 10 different shades. I believe it initially launched with eight and then two new limited-edition shades – 16 Fuschia and 17 Fig – were added to the collection around summer 2023.
In general, I think the shade range is pretty good. On the Clarins website a few of the shades look quite similar, like 10 Plum and 17 Fig. But actually I think each shade has something different to offer.
For example, 01 Honey is colourless and basically functions like a conditioning treatment. While you can wear it during the day (either by itself or as a glossy lipstick topper), it can also be used as an overnight sleeping mask for dry, dehydrated lips.
Also, shades 03 Cherry, 04 Pitaya, 05 Apricot, 08 Strawberry & 10 Plum are pH-reactive, meaning the colour changes according to the pH of your skin. Because of this, they’ll likely look a little different on each wearer!
Pigmentation
Lip oils are, by their nature, pretty sheer. Having said that, the Clarins Lip Comfort Oils pack the biggest punch of any lip oil I’ve tried.
It can often be disappointing when you buy various shades of a lip oil and they all end up looking the same on the lips… no colour, just glossy. That couldn’t be more untrue for the Clarins Lip Oils!
These are decently pigmented and I find, especially with the pH-reactive shades, the colour develops/intensifies the longer you leave it on your lips.
What also makes the Clarins Lip Oils stand out in the lip oil space is that they impart quite a noticeable tint to the lips, even when the shine has worn off.
Wear
It’s difficult to gauge how long these lip oils last. If we’re talking about glossiness, I’d say that the shine disappears after a couple of hours. Though of course it’ll fade quicker if you’re eating or drinking during this time! Like most lip oils, this pretty much vanishes after a meal.
If we’re talking about tint, the longevity increases. However, I still wouldn’t say these last more than 3-4 hours.
I definitely recommend carrying one of these lip oils around for touch ups during the day. The full-sized Clarins Lip Comfort Oils are quite chunky, but if you’re able to grab one of the minis, these are the perfect size to slip in a pocket or handbag.
Final thoughts
The Clarins Lip Comfort Oils are the perfect oil-tint hybrid. I think it’s incredible that Clarins have captured the best properties of both lip products: you’ve got all the hydration of a lip oil combined with the long-lasting power of a lip tint.
It’s for this reason that I think these are one of the few high-end lip oils that are actually worth the spend. I don’t have any other product like this in my collection!
Where can I buy it?
The Clarins Lip Comfort Oil retails for around £25 for a 7ml tube.
You can order it directly from the Clarins website, or grab it from Sephora or Boots. They’re actually on offer in Boots at the moment, meaning you get £6 off if you shop now.
At Christmas, Clarins usually comes out with stocking filler set containing a selection of lip oil minis. I recommend grabbing one of these if you’re not sure which shade to try first!
Have you tried the Clarins Lip Comfort Oil yet? If not, which shade do you want to try first? Let me know in the comments!
