As the weather starts to cool, I’ve been tirelessly scrolling through Pinterest trying to find autumn outfit ideas. In the interest of sustainability, I try not to splurge on a whole new wardrobe as soon as the seasons change, but I feel like autumn is a great time to invest in some everyday essentials to see you through the chillier months.
Buying a couple of good quality, timeless items every now and again is key to building up a curated clothing collection that you love. And, personally, I feel like the foundation of any capsule wardrobe (though this is doubly true when it comes to autumn/winter) is the shoes.
A good pair of boots can elevate almost any outfit, but how do you pick the perfect ones?
If you’re looking for something that’s comfortable, practical and stylish, I honestly feel you can’t go wrong with a pair of block heel ankle boots. Teamed with a midi dress or long skirt, these add personality and edge to an otherwise understated look. They’re also a solid choice underneath cropped straight leg jeans, especially if you want to show your new shoes off!
There are tons of block heel ankle boots on the market though, so if you need a little help narrowing the selection down, here are seven pairs I’ve been eyeing up!
Alohas South Leather Ankle Boots
Material: Leather
Heel height: 8cm / 3.1 inches
With a flared block heel and a sleek square toe, the Alohas South Ankle Boots are polished and practical. They’re made from sustainable leather and come in four colourways, including a couple of two-tone options (like the black and beige pair above) for those desiring something a bit different.
I have the plain black pair and I have to say they fit like a glove. They’re not tight around the ankles and they don’t pinch your toes. I highly recommend them if you’re looking for a classic black ankle boot for autumn!
RAID Alessa Block Heeled Ankle Boots
Material: PU leather or patent PU
Heel height: 9.4cm / 3.7 inches
If you’re on the hunt for a hard-wearing vegan option, RAID has you covered with their Alessa Block Heeled Ankle Boots. These come in two different colours: brown or black. The brown pair are made from synthetic leather but they do look pretty similar to the real thing!
I love the tall heel and the pointed toe. I can’t get over how affordable these are too. They’re only £39.99 but I feel like they look way more expensive.
L’Intervalle Bulmer Boots
Material: Leather
Heel height: 5.7cm / 2.25 inches
Like the Alohas boots, these L’Intervalle Bulmer Boots are handcrafted in Spain. The leather on this L’Intervalle pair, however, has a softer, slouchier look which makes them perfect for dressing down with a cute pair of jeans or wide-leg trousers.
The low block heel also means that these are a great all-day boot if you’re going to be on your feet for a while.
Sézane Axelle Ankle Boots
Material: Patent leather or split leather
Heel height: 6cm / 2.4 inches
The laminated block heel is an essential part of these Sézane ankle boots. The wood effect gives such a warm, earthy feel which makes these shoes such a perfect autumn staple.
They come in a variety of colours. You’ve got the black and white classics, as well as a few standouts like purple and honey. Sézane also offers multiple finishes for this boot too. The patent version is fully waterproof – ideal for those drizzly, autumnal days. The split cowhide leather is equally as elegant but requires a bit more care if you’re planning to step out into the rain.
Everlane City Boot
Material: Leather
Heel height: 4.5cm / 1.8 inches
Durable, comfortable and versatile, the Everlane City Boot is a great match for someone who’s always on the go. They require little to no break-in period, and the low heel means your feet don’t get sore at the end of the day.
The rounded-square toe looks so good peeping out of a wide-leg jean. I can also see these ankle boots working incredibly well with an oversized jumper and black mini skirt. The options are endless!
Vagabond Giselle Boots
Material: Leather
Heel height: 5.7cm / 2.2 inches
For a sock-boot type vibe, look no further than Vagabond’s Giselle Boots. These have a stretchy shaft which not only gives them a slim, stylish silhouette, but also makes them really comfortable around the ankles.
As with many classic styles, these block heel ankle boots come in two colourways – brown and black – which will go with almost anything.
Reformation Presley Ankle Boot
Material: Stretch nappa leather or stretch suede
Heel height: 7.5cm / 3 inches
Another soft leather option, these Reformation Presley Ankle Boots are like gloves for your feet. The stretch fabric ensures a close fit without any discomfort. I also love how the zip is concealed so it really looks like you’ve just slipped this pair on!
The colourways and textures scream autumn too. The brown and red come in suede while the black is exclusively available in a smooth leather finish.
At £378 this is the most expensive pair of block heel ankle boots on this list, but I think the timelessness and durability of these shoes makes them a worthwhile investment.
