Did you know that over 3.2 billion single-use plastic deodorants get thrown away every year?
With the average person getting through 4-6 deodorants a year, it’s not surprising that this figure quickly adds up!
But what if there was a way to reduce the amount of plastic going to landfill, particularly when it comes to cosmetic waste?
What if you didn’t have to chuck out your deodorant every time you used it up? What if your deodorant case could last you a lifetime?
Luckily Fussy is on the case (quite literally!).
Their planet-friendly natural deodorants are made to be endlessly refilled, so you don’t throw out your deodorant when it’s finished, you just pop another cartridge in.
Sounds great, right? But how well does the deodorant actually work? Keep reading to hear my thoughts and to find out whether it’s worth the spend.
About Fussy
Fussy is a natural deodorant and body care brand whose mission is to eliminate single-use plastic from the daily routine of its customers.
Their flagship product, the Natural Deodorant, was brought to life by a Kickstarter campaign in 2020 where over 3,000 people pledged around £115,000 to get the project up and running.
The Body Bars came next. These are also made with natural ingredients and light on plastic packaging. They’re designed to clean the skin without stripping it of moisture and will work for even the ‘fussiest’ (read, most sensitive) skin types.
How much does Fussy deodorant cost?
Fussy offers different deodorant options to suit different budgets. Here’s a quick breakdown…
If you want to try this out without the commitment of signing up to a subscription, there’s the Starter Pack at £15 which contains one case and one refill.
If you’re thinking you might like to give the subscription a go, this Starter Pack is reduced to £12. You’ll also get any refills going forwards at a discounted price.
Think you’d like to try out a couple of different scents? Fussy’s One-off Purchase (£26) allows you to pick one case and three refills of your choice.
The brand also offers a Scent Pack which contains one case and four refills. This is priced at £32.
How does Fussy’s deodorant subscription work?
To begin your Fussy journey, you first need to pick your plan. To jump right into your subscription, pick the Subscribe & Save Starter Pack.
If you’d like to try out the scents and subscribe at a later point, the One-off Purchase and Scent Pack are the way to go.
Once you’ve got your case, and started your subscription, Fussy will send your first box of refills after 30 days. It’s £15 for the three refills plus £1 for delivery.
After the first lot, you’ll then get your refills at three-month intervals. This essentially means you’ve got one refill per month.
If you’re just not getting through them and ending up with a backlog, you can change your order date or your delivery frequency at any time. You can change your chosen scents at any point too!
Ingredients
Fussy’s base deodorant formula contains just eight ingredients: sunflower seed wax, coconut oil, shea butter, caprylic, tapioca, sodium bicarbonate, magnesium hydroxide and lactobacillus ferment.
The oils, waxes and butters are the conditioning ingredients, while tapioca and magnesium hydroxide absorb moisture and sodium bicarbonate neutralises odour.
For those with sensitive skin, Fussy offers a kind-to-skin formula which doesn’t contain bicarbonate of soda. Instead they use a combination of glyceryl caprylate and arrowroot powers to achieve the same effect.
Scents
At the time of writing, Fussy has 11 normal scents and seven sensitive ones. They also offer an unscented option, Bare All, which contains their base ingredients but no essential oils.
As part of my starter pack, I picked Tropic Tonic which is a blend of lime, basil, marjoram, mandarin and lavender. To me, this smells sweet and fruity, like Skittles, but with a slightly herbal afternote. I wasn’t sure about it at first but it’s definitely growing on me!
Packaging
Fussy’s outer packaging is pretty simple. The Starter Kit comes in a cardboard box with the case and refill side by side.
While orders that contain a case are a little too big to be posted through your door, any refills you order come in letterbox-sized box which means you don’t even need to be in to accept delivery.
My box was a little bashed when it arrived but fortunately the deodorant itself was unscathed!
When it comes to product packaging, I like that the case is pebble-shaped so it can be easily slipped into the side pocket of a bag. Because it’s made of plastic, I can’t deny that it feels a little flimsy… but it does the job and my deodorant has so far been protected!
My only annoyance is that it’s not very clear which end is the cap – I always end up pulling the twisty bit!
Formula
The formula of this deodorant has me torn. On the one hand, it does take quite a bit of warming up to get it to a consistency that’s swipe-able. It can tug at the skin quite a bit to start off with!
On the other hand, once the product is warmed up, it applies really nicely without any flakiness or stickiness.
This has much more of a balm texture than other natural deodorants I’ve tried. It feels very lightweight, it’s pretty easy to forget that you’re even wearing it at all!
Longevity
The strange thing about this deodorant is that, though the scent doesn’t really stick around, it still seems to fend off body odour.
By the end of the day, I feel like my armpits are odourless – I can’t smell the deodorant or sweat!
This isn’t necessarily a downside, but I have used other natural deodorants that maintain their scent for longer.
Final verdict
Overall, I’m pretty happy with my Fussy natural deodorant purchase. The scent is pleasant, it feels nice on the skin and it does seem to combat body odour throughout the day.
I’m not sure it takes the top spot on my natural deodorant ranking but it’s a really solid choice if you’re looking to make the switch to reusable products.
The main drawback for me is the strength of the scent. As I mentioned above, Tropic Tonic isn’t the longest lasting (or maybe I just become nose blind to it by the end of the day!). I’d like to try out some of the other scents to see whether my experience is different.
I do really like how smooth and comfortable the formula is though. This is one of the few natural deodorants I’ve tried where the product feels almost weightless on the skin. It’s really hard to achieve this with a natural deodorant so hats off to Fussy for that 🙌
FAQ
Is this an antiperspirant?
This is a deodorant, not an antiperspirant. It won’t stop you from sweating but it will absorb moisture and stop odour-producing bacteria from sitting on your skin.
How long do the refills last?
Each refill is expected to last between four to eight weeks.
