It’s no secret that spray deodorants are bad for the environment. In fact, a 2021 study from the University of York showed that aerosols (beauty-related or otherwise) released more harmful compounds into the air than all the vehicles in the UK.
It’s clear that roll-on or stick deodorants are the way to go. But, of course, not all stick deodorants are made equal! And it’s not always easy to spot the ones that are worth the spend…
You’ll want to look at a number of things when choosing a new deodorant. Is the packaging recyclable? What are the scents like? How long does it last?
I had all these questions about the Wild refillable stick deodorant and, after finally trying it out, I’m here to share the answers!
About Wild
Wild is a sustainable, natural deodorant brand whose mission is to challenge throwaway culture by creating plastic-free, refillable products. Their deodorants are gender neutral and packed with natural ingredients which are designed to be gentle and non-irritating on the skin.
Wild doesn’t make antiperspirants. They recognise that sweating is a natural bodily function so their deodorant formulas are aluminium-free, fighting odour with absorptive powders like tapioca starch instead.
That’s not all though. All the brand’s products are vegan, cruelty-free and free from artificial fragrances too.
How much does Wild deodorant cost?
Wild gives you the option of purchasing a one-off bundle or signing up for a subscription. The prices are a little different for each so I’ll start with the bundle first!
A Wild Starter Pack, which contains one case and one refill, costs £15. This is obviously quite a bit more than your standard drugstore deodorant stick, but remember that you won’t need to buy the case each time. After that initial purchase, it’s just a matter of buying the refills when needed.
If you’re afraid of running out and want Wild to keep you topped up, their subscription service is pretty handy.
How does the Wild deodorant subscription work?
Wild’s deodorant subscription is completely flexible, meaning you can set your delivery schedule to a frequency that suits your needs. You can also pause, skip or cancel at any time.
Subscribing means the same Starter Pack I mentioned above is just £10 (instead of the original £15).
You’ll then receive a pack of three refills every 2, 3 or 4 months for £5 per refill. Bought by themselves the refills are usually £6 each.
Wild sends out the refills in threes to reduce packaging waste and the refill trio (don’t worry, you can choose your scents) is supposed to last you three months.
What are the ingredients?
Each scent has a slightly different ingredients list, but the base remains the same.
You’ve got things like tapioca starch and baking soda which absorb moisture and reduce odour. There’s a handful of plant oils, like coconut oil and sunflower seed oil, to help the deodorant apply smoothly without any tugging. And cocoa seed butter and shea butter to prevent dryness.
If your skin is particularly sensitive, Wild also do a baking soda free range which swaps out the bicarb for rice starch instead.
Wild deodorant contains no parabens, aluminium or sulphates. Since it’s not an antiperspirant, you also won’t find aluminium salts (which temporarily block underarm sweat glands) in here.
What deodorant scents do Wild offer?
At the time of writing, Wild seems to offer 15 scents in their regular formula and 10 scents in their sensitive skin (bicarb free) collection.
They often come out with new, limited-edition scents, so if there’s nothing that takes your fancy at the moment, keep an eye out for future releases!
How’s it packaged?
I’m a big fan of Wild’s refillable containers. They’re chunky so it feels like you’re not going to lose your grip on them when you apply your deodorant.
I also think they just look more attractive than most drugstore stick deodorants. If I place it next to the other skincare products on my dresser, it really doesn’t stand out that much!
Yes, the size makes it slightly impractical for chucking in a handbag or a cosmetics case when you’re travelling – you’d definitely want something smaller for that purpose! Luckily, though, Wild also do a set of mini deodorants which would be much more suited for this.
On a final note, I found installing the refills surprisingly easy. I thought it would be super fiddly but the new cartridge was in within seconds.
The refills are wrapped in bamboo pulp which makes them completely compostable (if disposed of correctly). Bamboo grows really quickly and is an excellent renewable resource, so its environmental impact is very small – especially when you compare it to traditional plastic deodorant cases!
What’s the formula like?
Before applying, I expected that I’d have to warm the deodorant up quite a bit to stop it tugging at my skin. However, the formula is soft and creamy so it glides onto the armpits with very little resistance at all.
It’s not sticky and it dries down matte. I have noticed that it can sometimes transfer to my clothes if I don’t wait a bit before getting dressed. But, because the formula doesn’t contain aluminium salts, there’s no yellow staining.

How long does Wild deodorant last?
The first couple of times I used the Wild deodorant I wasn’t completely blown away. I’d been using antiperspirants prior to switching over to this natural deodorant, and I think my body just needed time to adjust.
Initially, I found that the scent would last for a few hours, but by the end of the day it had worn off. I’d have to reapply at least once or twice during the day to make sure I still smelled fresh!
However, after about a week of use I noticed I didn’t have to do this anymore. The deodorant now seems to last me the whole day and, although the scent definitely isn’t as strong by the end of the day as it was at the start, I don’t smell sweaty! A definite improvement I think!
Wild deodorant review: Final verdict
On first use, I wasn’t 100% sold, but the longer I use my Wild deodorant the more I like it.
I’ve enjoyed the scents I’ve tried so far – I’m usually a ‘fresh cotton’ type of person so I was surprised that I actually liked the stronger scents!
It’s also a lot more comfortable to wear than I initially expected. Up until now I’ve been a pretty loyal roll-on wearer – if it applies like water, I’m probably going to like it. But the Wild deodorant doesn’t feel thick or waxy under the arms, and it doesn’t flake off like many spray deodorants do.
Overall, I’m impressed with the formula and have made the decision to swap out my roll-ons for natural, stick deodorants going forwards!
