If you’re into skincare you’ll probably have some idea of just how wasteful it can be. Single-use, plastic packaging is everywhere! But of course that’s not the only issue. With every new skincare release, there’s always some kind of pressure to pick up the latest products, meaning we end up with tubes and bottles of goodies that might expire before we even get to use them. So, to avoid creating so much unnecessary waste, here are a few tips to help you curate your own zero-waste skincare routine.
1. Switch to reusable makeup remover pads
This is one of the simplest changes to make in your skincare routine. And trust me, once you make the switch you’ll hardly notice the difference! Reusable cotton rounds/cloths are not only much more eco-friendly than their disposable counterparts, they’re also cheaper in the long run too. Think about how many packets of disposable cotton pads you buy per year and how much that adds up to. With reusable makeup remover pads it’s just a one-time purchase!
Here are some of my fave makeup-removing rounds/cloths:
- Medik8 Reusable Bamboo Cotton Pads £12.00
- Face Halo Original 3-Pack £18.00
- Makeup Eraser Chic Black Cloth £20 <– If the discolouration of disposable pads puts you off, choose this!
2. Use your hands
I always felt like I needed skincare tools for everything – cotton pads for toner, a cleansing brush for washing my face etc. But it turns out that using your hands is an equally effective option.
When it comes to toners and essences, for example, I used to get so disappointed when my cotton pad soaked up most of the product. Now, I don’t waste any product at all because pouring it onto my palm or fingers means I can apply it directly to my face.
3. Avoid plastic packaging
Plastic-free packaging used to be really difficult to find. But luckily more and more brands are starting to come out with zero-waste or low-waste packaging options. Look out for skincare products that come in glass or metal jars/bottles and that are packed using sustainable materials like paper or cardboard. These are much easier to recycle than their plastic alternatives and, if you’re really committed to creating zero waste, these are much easier to upcycle too. This leads me to my next point…
4. Repurpose your empties
Try to repurpose your empty containers whenever you can. Of course, this might not be possible for all products – especially those that come in tiny plastic tubes. But there are tonnes of things you can do with empty jars and bottles (or even compact cases) that you would otherwise throw out.
The Nudie Glow blog has some great suggestions on how empty skincare containers can be reused. You might be able to turn your old jars into planters for your succulents, make your empty bottles into reed diffusers, or use both of these containers to store your DIY skincare concoctions.
5. DIY it
Speaking of DIY concoctions, making your own skincare products is another way to make your skincare routine completely zero-waste. Obviously this doesn’t mean you should go rummaging through your cupboards for baking soda or apple cider vinegar – these are definitely going to be too harsh for your skin. But there are other ingredients, like honey and aloe vera, that you might be able to incorporate into your skincare routine.
6. Simplify your routine
Looking at the 3 R’s – reduce, reuse, recycle – we have to remember that it’s listed in the order of importance. Reusing and recycling are great ways to deal with the waste we’re producing. But the only true way to cut down on waste is to avoid buying unnecessary items.
If you’re concerned that you’re producing excess waste when it comes to skincare, then you might want to condense the number of products you use. Try using just one cleanser or moisturiser for morning and night, and skip the sheet masks. You never know, your skin might appreciate the simplicity!
