Going into 2021, I made a hard promise to myself to shop more ethically and put more thought into the products I buy. While it’s tempting to prioritise ease over sustainability (I know, I only recently parted with the last of my remaining single-use cotton pads), we could all do a little more to reduce the amount we waste and be a little kinder to our planet. And, guess what, it doesn’t have to cost a fortune! I’ve rounded up a few of my personal beauty faves to make it a little easier for you to revamp your skincare collection on a budget.
1. The Body Shop Camomile Cleansing Butter £11.00
Not only is this cleansing butter insanely soft on the skin, its packaging is completely recyclable. If you live in the UK, simply return your empty container to the store and they’ll do the rest for you. It couldn’t be easier!
The Body Shop is (for the most part) vegan-friendly, doesn’t test on animals and supports its suppliers through a Community Fair Trade programme. They also make it their mission to support and empower women, backing various campaigns that fight domestic violence and sex trafficking. If there’s one brand you need to be buying from, it’s this one.

2. Weleda Skin Food £7.95 (30ml)
This is a miracle product if, like me, your skin gets super dry during those pesky winter months. I’ve been using this cream consistently and have noticed that my face feels much softer and smoother than it usually does at this time of year. You don’t have to use it everyday and a little goes a long way, so it’s great value for money!
On top of this, Weleda is one of just two brands to receive the UEBT certification, meaning that its practices live up to globally recognised standards. All raw materials are sourced in a way that conserves biodiversity and respects local communities. Click here to read more about their commitment to sustainability.
3. Mooju Reusable Makeup Pads Set £15.99
These are by far my favourite reusable makeup remover pads. The packaging is gorgeous and completely recyclable too (though I personally couldn’t bring myself to throw it away). The pads themselves are incredibly soft and super easy to clean. The Beauty Box comes with its own mesh laundry bag that you can just toss into the washing machine with your regular white load. The kit also includes a terry cloth headband to protect your hair while you cleanse or remove your makeup.
You get 21 facial rounds in the set and each pad is colour-coded according to function: the smallest ones with the grey trim are for eye makeup; the ones with the beige trim are for toner; and the largest ones with the white trim are for face cleansing. Considering the variety, there really is no excuse to go back to the disposable option!
4. Pixi Glow Tonic £18
This tonic is great for brightening your skin and removing impurities from your pores. It contains loads of natural ingredients like aloe vera and ginseng that also help to soothe your skin and boost blood flow. Though it’s a little pricier than the other products on the list, I think the sheer amount you get (250ml!) certainly makes it worth it.
What I love about Pixi, as a brand, is that they don’t test on animals ANYWHERE in the world. And, while not all their products are vegan, their famous glow tonic is!
5. Burt’s Bees Almond & Milk Hand Cream £10.99
Ok, so this one isn’t for your face, but it’s still a must have! I love this hand cream, it’s so rich and creamy and smells delicious – think Bakewell tart in a glass jar. This product has single-handedly (excuse the pun) saved my skin, given the cold and the amount I’ve been washing my hands recently.
Burt’s Bees claims that their products are made from 99% natural ingredients and that all these materials are responsibly sourced. Having offset all greenhouse gas emissions, the brand is also completely carbon neutral – not an easy feat for a company of its size!
