It’s that time of year again when a bedroom overhaul seems well overdue. We’ve been spending hours upon hours within the same four walls so it’s only natural to want to freshen up and revamp this space. And, fortunately, this doesn’t have to cost a fortune. I’ve come up with a handful of room decor ideas that are super stylish and can be done on a budget.
From candles to clothing racks, these items are sure to make your bedroom look and feel waaay more modern and up-to-date. There’s even a few DIY home decor projects in this list for you to try out.
Take a look!
1. Abstract Candles
My pastel candle obsession is getting somewhat out of hand … and this display is making me want to go out and buy even more.
Abstract candles are so fun and can be a great way to add an extra splash of colour to your room. The bubble and seashell ones are my absolute faves – I can’t get enough!
The best thing about these is that there are tonnes of small, independent businesses selling them on Etsy. So many of them are vegan, cruelty-free and made with soy wax, which I absolutely love.
2. Mini Vases
Mini vases are the ‘it’ decor of the moment. They look so chic and can be placed practically anywhere in your room. Your bedside table, bookshelf, desk – they look good everywhere.
The gold-rimmed glass vases in the pic above are so cute and stylish. You can pick up some very similar ones from H&M Home.
If porcelain is more your thing, this bud vase is sooo gorgeous.
3. Clear Jewellery Box
Yes, jewellery boxes are extremely practical, but they’re also a great decorative piece.
If you strongly believe that jewellery should be admired, not stored away, this might be the perfection solution. These clear boxes do a great job of showing off your accessories even when you’re not wearing them.
4. Clothing Rack
If you have the space, this is an excellent way of using things you already own (i.e. clothes) as additional decoration.
Just choose certain statement pieces that match the colour scheme of your room, grab some cute hangers and arrange them on the rail.
I really like this wooden one from Urban Outfitters as it has extra shelves at the bottom for things like trousers and shoes. I actually think it wouldn’t be too difficult to turn this into a DIY project you could do at home!
5. Art Prints
The right wall art can instantly upgrade your bedroom. If you’re artistically gifted, you could try and draw/paint/make something yourself. Or if, like me, you can barely draw stick people, you might want to buy something to stick on your walls.
Desenio does some crazily affordable prints that come in a range of different designs. A mix of illustration and text posters will create a stunning gallery effect (like the photo above).
6. Lamp Shades
Lamp shades are so often forgotten about, but they can definitely make or break a room.
I really love these rattan shades, they give off such a natural feel and cast a great shadow over the room when in use.
7. Cushions
There’s no better way to spruce up a set of white bedsheets than to chuck on a couple (read: a lot) of colourful cushions.
I really like the idea of mixing colours and textures so I would definitely suggest buying a few different styles which you could rotate during the year.
This French Connection tufted cushion is perfect for replicating the look above. So is this one from La Redoute!
8. Hanging Plant Holder
Don’t have the floor space for plants? No worries, simply hang them from the ceiling instead.
This would be a great DIY project for those who love crafts – all you need is some string!
This video shows you how to make a macramé planter in less than 5 minutes. That’s insane!
9. Geometric Shelves
These look seriously cute and add extra interest/dimension to your room.
Shelves like these are perfect for holding plants, books and any other kind of ornaments. Style them how you will!
Homebase does some very similar to the ones above. I also really like this metal wire alternative – the gold is calling to me.
10. Storage Baskets
Storage baskets are one of the best room decor ideas, for the simple reason that they’re so versatile. Depending on the style, you can use them to hold your blankets and pillows, laundry, or even your plants.
Seagrass baskets are some of my favourite natural options, but don’t let this restrict you! There are so many shapes and materials to choose from.
11. Pouffe/Footstool
Ok, this isn’t essential, but it can be really practical. A pouffe makes the perfect footstool, spare seat or – on the odd occasion – place to put your worn clothes.
I love the grey knitted one that appears in the photo above – it’s the texture for me. I also think a jute pouffe would look super cute in this space.
12. Chunky, Knit Throw
A thick throw is a must for those cold, winter nights. I like to keep one (or two) on the end of my bed so I can easily snuggle into it if I get a bit chilly.
During the warmer months, you can still leave your blankets on the bed for decoration. Just chuck them into your storage basket before you go to sleep.
13. Jute Rug
Fluffy rugs feel fantastic underfoot, but they also get grubby pretty quickly. I’m looking at you white sheepskin IKEA mat. So, why not try something that’s equally as hard-wearing, just a lot easier to clean?
Welcome, jute.
Jute rugs are a minimalist staple that have been slowly making their way into the bedroom. They work perfectly with neutral colour palettes and add a little flair to the carpet or wooden floor lying underneath.
14. Storage Ladder
If, for whatever reason, you’re not allowed to affix hooks to your walls, this is an amazing alternative. Storage ladders are ideal for hanging your handbags, jackets and even tiny plants.
Matching a ladder with other wooden furniture in your room just ties everything together and looks effortlessly cool.
15. Round Mirrors
Oversized round mirrors are one of the easiest room decor ideas to incorporate into your space. They look really good just above the bed or placed over the top of a vanity/dresser.
I love love love the way the mirror in the photo is outlined with ivy, it softens it a bit and helps it fit in with the rest of the room more.
16. Fairy Lights
No room would be complete without a bit of mood lighting, and fairy lights are the perfect way to achieve this. Drape them over your mirror or fix them over your headboard – whatever floats your boat.
17. Quirky Bedding
Good bedding is the foundation of your overall bedroom look, so this is definitely something you’ll want to spend a little more time picking out.
If you plan to buy loads of cushions, blankets and throws, you might want to choose a block colour (like white or cream) so that there’s no clashing.
If accessories aren’t your biggest priority, or you’d prefer to let the bedsheets shine by themselves, I’d go for something fun like the peach print cover set above. Seriously, I’m obsessed!
18. LED Clocks
These LED clocks are so fun and different. They’re great for adding a bit of extra light to your room and come in a whole variety of colours. The classic white one is my fave!
And don’t worry, you can adjust the intensity if you’re worried about being kept awake. We don’t want our beauty sleep to be disturbed!
19. Flower Wall
This bedroom decor idea is sooo adorable and actually really easy to do.
Simply pick up some artificial or dried flowers from your local department/craft store and arrange them on the wall however you see fit.
I think this looks so cute placed around the mirror. It really adds some interest to the otherwise plain white wall.
20. Vines
If attaching individual flowers to your wall seems like a little too much effort, why not try vine garlands instead?
These are an amazingly effective way of bringing life to your bare walls and they look even better intertwined with some fairy lights.
Which room decor ideas are your favourites?
